The Challenge

Standing on the Gettysburg battlefield today, it is almost impossible to fully visualize what happened there. The fields are quiet. The landmarks are sparse. There are no visual cues to tell you where the 9th Mississippi Infantry held the tree line, where Pickett’s men crossed the open field under cannon fire, or where the commanders stood as they made the decisions that turned the tide of the Civil War.

More than 1.8 million people visit Gettysburg National Military Park every year. The vast majority lack the prior knowledge to interpret what they are standing in the middle of. For the millions more who will never make the trip, the battlefield exists only as a date in a history textbook. QuantumERA set out to solve both problems at once: build an experience immersive enough to make the battlefield legible for first-time visitors on-site, and compelling enough to bring Gettysburg to life for anyone, anywhere in the United States.

The Solution

Gettysburg: A Nation Divided is QuantumERA’s original mixed reality production.
A self-guided, GPS-enabled battlefield experience built around 21 points of interest across the Gettysburg National Military Park, with an alternate at-home mode that delivers the full experience from anywhere in the world via an interactive map.

The experience layers multiple interaction modes into a single seamless visit:

Meet Key Figures on the Battlefield

At each location, animated archival photographs of historic commanders and figures come to life in augmented reality. Users stand where the commander stood, see that figure appear in AR directly in front of them, hear a narrated description of who they are and what happened at that exact spot. The experience is voiced throughout by actor Scott Eastwood in cinematic-quality sequences.

Watch the Battle Unfold From Above

At pivotal moments, the app lifts users above the battlefield in a 360° experience. Soldiers march across open fields under cannon fire and entire armies are rendered in photo-real animation. The geography of the battle is suddenly visible from a vantage point no visitor could otherwise access.

360° Flag Views & Landmark Orientation

One of the app’s most practical and distinctive features: because the Gettysburg battlefield offers few identifiable visual landmarks, QuantumERA built 360° flag views at every location. Users spin around in full 360° to find annotated Union and Confederate flags placed around the field. Tapping any flag reveals the commander for that position and a description of the action that took place there.

Artifact Scavenger Hunt

Users discover and collect virtual artifacts hidden across the battlefield, earning gold coins and rising through military ranks from Private to Major General. This game mechanic deepens engagement and rewards exploration at every stop on the tour.

The Museum

A dedicated in-app Museum allows users to pick up any collected artifact, rotate it in 360°, and explore the story it carries. A physical artifact becomes a narrative portal.

At-Home Mode

For the millions who will never visit Gettysburg in person, the app offers a full alternative experience. An interactive map lets users tap any of the 21 battlefield locations from anywhere in the world. Users have access to the same AR scenes, narration, and battle animations they would experience standing on the ground.

Gettysburg: A Nation Divided is a 2019 MEA Award Finalist recognized for excellence in mixed reality educational experience design. The app launched in 2020 on iOS and was subsequently released on Android, with a major relaunch in 2021 as tourism restrictions eased across the US and battlefield visitation rebounded. This project is a clear expression of our ability to self-publish experiences successfully. It was built on the foundation of prior award-winning work with Alamo content.
