2020 TRENDS IN AUGMENTED REALITY

We have officially entered the age of spacial storytelling. This coming year will be a pivotal year for the adoption of augmented reality, virtual reality, and mixed reality by consumers and brands. Through apps like those developed by QuatumERA, consumers will be placed inside narratives, giving them a sense of moving through a scene and interacting with objects and characters. According to Ted Schilowitz in a recent article in TIME magazine, “It’s like taking a theme park into your home and being pulled into a simulation-style attraction.”

Here are some stats you should be aware of when it comes to augmented reality:

  • Augmented reality and virtual reality conversations had 13.2 million engagements online during the first half of 2019. This is up 0.5% compared to the second half of 2018.
  • 5% of those mentions were in conversations relating to marketing, meaning marketers are going to look to augmented reality to boost user experience and engage through gamification.
  • Virtual reality has 8.6 times the share of mentions relating to trends for 2020, compared to trends conversations in 2019. While AR has 7.03 times the share. This increase in mentions is linked to conversations relating to 5G network availability. Now that 5G connections are available, plus the technology improvements in phones, 2020 is the perfect time for augmented reality, virtuality, and mixed reality experiences to take off.

It is time to start thinking about what augmented reality can do for your business and your customer experiences, both online and offline. These interactive experiences are particularly important when targeting Gen Z, who have come to expect digital interactions.

Many experts believe that augmented reality will be integral to boosting traffic numbers at brick-and-mortar stores by offering interactive shopping experiences. And if augmented reality helps improve the user experience in-store, virtual reality will be essential for boosting it online. From airlines that allow customers to pre-experience trips, to stores that let customers virtually try on clothes, brands are already providing interactions that consumers desire.

2020 will be the year that augmented reality and virtual reality take off. If you haven’t invested in the technology yet, now’s the time. Millennials and Gen Z are tech-savvy generations that demand innovation, creativity, personalization, brand purpose, and transparency. In 2020, if you want to drive engagement and find new ways to reach your customers, you need to consider just what these generations want.
