Mixed Reality in Everyday Life

Mixed Reality (MR) creatively provides a way to interact with the digital world and experience technology uniquely. Combining augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR), mixed reality intertwines physical and virtual interactions. Mixed reality can be applied to many areas of everyday life, making these physical and virtual interactions more relatable than you might imagine.

What is Mixed Reality?

Mixed reality combines physical activity with virtual elements, allowing you to interact with both simultaneously. You can manipulate real-world and virtual objects, creating a digitally enhanced experience that feels tangible and immersive. MR technology can understand the environment, comprehend human actions, and anchor virtual objects in physical and virtual spaces. Displays include hand-eye tracking, speech input, and more. Overall, mixed reality technology offers a new way of interacting with the physical and virtual worlds, providing riveting experiences once thought impossible.

Real-Life Examples of Mixed Reality

HoloLens, developed by Microsoft, is one of the most prominent examples of mixed reality in everyday life. HoloLens allows users to view 3D images and objects as if they are a part of the environment around them. For example, the manufacturing industry uses MR technology (via Hololens) by interacting with an actual engine in front of them. Hololens can also provide information in real-time without mechanics pausing in their work. These features make engine repairs more efficient and versatile.

Another example of mixed reality is Ubisoft’s development of the interactive dance game Just Dance. Just Dance uses MR technology to control movement and mimic what you see on screen or in virtual space. This kind of experience can also be replicated in non-game environments for museums and other venues interested in incorporating interactive elements  Because MR technology is not limited to a headset, it makes this application and many others applicable.

What the Future Holds for Mixed Reality

The future of mixed reality is a bright one. MR technology is yet to reach a large consumer base due to several factors such as cost, size, and efficiency. Tech companies like Apple are continuously working on solutions to better-fit businesses and consumers alike, and we hope to see new progress in the near future. Though MR technology is relatively new, XR today has shared that 62% of companies say MR raises customer satisfaction, and 55% say it improves work processes. As businesses invest more in mixed reality, benefits such as immersive and interactive activity, real-time collaboration, improved training and learning experiences, and enhanced customer engagement are becoming increasingly accessible and impactful.
